UNIMA MANAGEMNT PLEDGES TO SUPPORT UNIVERSITY SPORTS WITH FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI STAFF SPORTS ASSOCIATION INTERCOLLEGE GAMES UNDERWAY IN LILONGWE
University of Malawi management has reiterated its commitment to supporting the University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) intercollege games. The games are currently underway in Lilongwe at Malawi Police Services’ headquarters, Area 30.
Speaking during the opening ceremony Guest of Honour Professor Al Mtenje who is also the Pro Vice Chancellor of University of Malawi pledged to support UMSSA at every level possible describing the intercollege games as a preparation for Southern African University Staff Sports Association (SSAUSA).
Professor Al Mtenje who scored in the penalty shoot-outs to symbolically mark the official opening of the UMSSA games enthused the audience when he revealed that University management was committed in ensuring that sports in the University received the necessary financial and technical support.
“I would like to report that the Vice Chancellor of University of Malawi Professor John D. Kalenga Saka has approved UMSSA proposal to host the SSAUSA games in 2019. Therefore these UMSSA games here at Area 30 will act as preparations for SSAUSA games”, Professor Mtenje explained.
“I would like to pledge that Unima will assist in the financial and technical support for the SSAUSA games taking in December, 2018”, he said.
“The aim of the UMSSA intercollege games aim to build and strengthen bonds, linkages and friendship for the participating teams.
Professor Mtenje also thanked the Malawi Police Service for accepting to host this year’s games at its headquarters in Lilongwe.
The Inspector General of Police Dr. Lexten Kachama was represented by Commissioner Willie Mwaluka.
Mwaluka who was in his jovial mood, described the games as a milestone for linking the police with the country’s public universities.
“This sporting discipline has presented us with an opportunity to make friends”, Mwaluka reckoned.
Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) are participating as affiliates while Malawi Police Service as hosts.
Football, netball, volleyball, chess, darts are among the sports disciplines being competed for where trophies will be awarded to the overall winners as colleges of University of Malawi as well as MUST and LUANAR.
Old Mutual is among the partners who have channeled their resources towards the preparation of the games and pledged to continue doing so while advising University staff members to practice the saving culture by buying policies from Old Mutual as a way of preparing for their retirement.
