MATURE ENTRY INTAKE FOR THE 2014/2015 ACADEMIC YEAR (REVISED VERSION)

The University of Malawi is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for admission into its mature entry programmes for the 2014-2015 academic year.

  1. 1.    Minimum Entry Requirements for all applicants

Interested applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

a)    A Malawi School Certificate of Education or any equivalent O-Level qualification with at least 4 subjects passed with credit (6 subjects for some programmes) including ENGLISH LANGUAGE and other subjects specified in the table under point (d) below.

b)    A University of Malawi Diploma or, a relevant Diploma from accredited programmes of the University of Malawi such as those offered at Domasi College of Education, Natural Resources College, Malawi College for Health Sciences, Theological College, St. John of God College or an equivalent Diploma from a recognized Institution of higher learning.

c)     A minimum of 2 years post diploma relevant work experience in a field related to the programme applied for.

College of Medicine

2013/2014 ACADEMIC YEAR INTAKE FOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE – FOR BSc IN IN ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE AND BSc GENERAL SURGERY FOR CLINICAL OFFICERS

The College of Medicine is inviting applications from eligible clinical officers, for selection into a BSc in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and BSc in General Surgery. These are three year BSc programs comprised of module courses at College of Medicine, Central hospitals and on the job training.

1.         BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (BSc) IN ANAESTHESIA AND INTENSIVE CARE

Programme Description: 

The BSc Programme in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is a new clinical specialty  degree course comprising of an initial six month period spent at the College of Medicine, Blantyre, followed by 18 months at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. The final year will be (depending on whether the candidate is an anaesthetic clinical officer or clinical officer) based at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Zomba Central Hospital or a district hospital.

Entry requirements:

Interested candidates should have:

  1. MSCE, “O” Level, IGCSE or GCE with 6 credits including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. A Diploma in Clinical Medicine or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  3. At least two years working experience as a clinical officer providing anaesthesia and other clinical care at a central hospital, district hospital or rural hospital.
  4. Candidates should further demonstrate evidence of leadership skills, excellent communication skills, commitment and experience of doing the degree programme of their choice, ability to work under pressure, dedication to extremely ill and severely injured patients, excellence in data recording and record keeping, academic capacity and potential.

2.         BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN GENERAL SURGERY FOR CLINICAL OFFICERS

Programme Description:

This is a 3 years full-time programme that will be delivered at College of Medicine.

Entry requirements:  interested candidates should have:

  1. MSCE, “O” Level, IGCSE or GCE with 6 credits including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. A Diploma in Clinical Medicine or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  1. At least two years working experience as clinical officer providing surgical and other clinical care at a district or rural hospital.

Tuition fee:

The tuition fee for both programmes is K550,000.00 per academic year

Scholarship:

A limited number of scholarships to cover tuition are available for few deserving candidates.

The University wishes to inform all interested candidates for Chancellor College programmes that the College will not select any self-sponsored generic undergraduate candidates due to the double stream of 1st year government sponsored students that will be admitted this year.

2. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

(i) General Requirements

a. Applicants should have a minimum combined score of MSCE and UEE of 50% from the 2012 UEE, or

b. Candidates with A-Levels or equivalent qualifications obtained in 2010, 2011 or 2012 should have a minimum or equivalent grade of ‘C’ in 3 relevant subjects to the programme they are applying for.

(iii) Selection Criteria

a. Selection into the University of Malawi for self-sponsored students shall be based on merit.

b. Candidates who fail to qualify or compete favourably for admission to their desired programmes shall not be redirected.

NB: All candidates who were withdrawn from the University of Malawi or any comparable institution on academic grounds and those already registered with the University of Malawi or any comparable university as residential or self-sponsored students are not eligible for admission.

3. ADMISSIONS ARRANGEMENT

All candidates will be admitted on non-residential basis and would have to find and pay for their own accommodation and meals.

4. FEES

Successful self-sponsored generic undergraduate candidates will be required to pay tuition fees worth K250,000.00 per year.

5. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application forms can be obtained on written request or in person from the address given below and from the Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing and the following affiliate colleges of the University of Malawi: St John of God College of Nursing, Malawi College of Forestry and Malawi College of Fisheries. The Application form can also be downloaded from the University of Malawi website: www.unima.mw. No application fee shall be required.

Alternatively, interested candidates can just send us a letter indicating their name, MSCE/O-Level examination numbers as well any three preferred programmes offered under Section 1 of this advert.

A) General Requirements for Mature and Parallel Entry Students

Applicants for mature entry programmes must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. A Malawi School Certificate of Education or its equivalent O-Level qualification with at least 4 credits including ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
  2. A University of Malawi Diploma or, a relevant Diploma from accredited programmes of the University of Malawi such as those offered at Domasi College of Education, Natural Resources College, Malawi College for Health Sciences, Theological College, St. John of God College or an equivalent Diploma from a recognized University or Institution of higher learning.
  3. A minimum of 2 years post diploma work experience in a field related to the programme applied for.
  4. Applicants must also meet the specific Faculty and programme requirements outlined below:

B) Specific Entry Requirements for Mature and Parallel Entry Students

Entry Duration Specific entry requirements in addition to a credit pass in MSCE/O-Level English Language and at least 2 years relevant work experience

4. NOTE:

• Successful government sponsored 1st year candidates for college of medicine programmes shall receive a stipend, based on the prevailing rates in the university, to carter for their accommodation and meals.

• Candidates who were withdrawn from the university of Malawi or any other comparable university on academic grounds and those already registered with the university of Malawi or any comparable university as residential, non-residential or mature students (except those applying for 1st year intake at college of medicine) are not eligible for admission.

6. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application forms can be obtained on written request or in person from the address given below. Duly completed application forms together with proof of payment of a non-refundable application fee of K3, 000.00 for College of Medicine Government sponsored applicants, K3, 500.00 for all self sponsored applicants and U$300 for international applicants should be sent to the same address and not to any constituent college of the University of Malawi. Applicants should attach a deposit slip as proof of payment of an appropriate application fee.
